This recent biography of the most promising composer of the Twentieth Century was written mainly from the military point of view. Butterworth always knew he wanted to compose music and tried other professions until he joined the army as a private in 1914. He soon found his true profession as a popular and dedicated officer in the Thirteenth Battalion of the Durham Light infantry. His fighting, composing and Morris dancing career was tragically cut short by a sniper’s bullet in the early morning of August 5th 1916 during a decisive phase of the Battle of the Somme.

Butterworth is known for his amazing range in the few pieces of orchestral work and songs he left for posterity. A great friend of Ralph Vaughan Williams he was a collector of English folk songs and Morris dances.

This book contains many previously unpublished and unresearched photographs from Butterworth’s own album and the cooperation of his surviving relatives.
