The first complete biography of the great and modest Cornish poet won the Cornish Literary Guild Salver the year after publication. Causley could have been Poet Laureate but refused to put himself forward. Known for his children’s poetry as well as his ballads he was a versatile and, although usually using conventional poetic forms, an original poet who saw the world through uniquely Cornish eyes.

Resulting from much research and help from his friends and relations this biography gives us insights into a very private man who lived almost his whole life in Launceston. Described by his friend Ted Hughes as ‘the greatest poet laureate we never had’ Causley was a loving and much loved man.

This book contains some previously unpublished photographs and many quotes from his illegal wartime diaries.

"This is the first biography of Charles Causley, and takes us towards the heart of a marvellous poet and deeply intriguing man. It’s all well done: clear, sympathetic, appreciative and shrewd. Everyone who loves Causley’s poems will want to read it." Sir Andrew Motion.
