This book is a novel based on the life of Thomas Ching, ‘Eton, Eaton, eaten Ching’, whose monumental plaque can be found in St Mary Magdalene’s Church in Launceston. He went to sea as a junior officer on the barque ‘Charles Eaton’ which was wrecked at the entrance to the Torres Strait in 1834. Rescued by ‘ignorant savages’ from a sinking raft, Ching, and others, were killed and eaten but three young boys were saved and brought up by the islanders. Later rescued, the cabin boy returns to Launceston telling a very different story about the natives who looked after him. An unusual and thought-provoking novel that sees the threat of colonisation and exploitation from the natives’ point of view. With a highly unpredictable outcome this book is fast paced and challenging.
''A rattling good yarn, well researched and well told.'' Hollyer an Gof, Gorsedd Kernow.
