...is a fourth collection of ghost stories entitled ‘Night Gaunts and Psychopomps’.
H P Lovecraft suffered from nightmares which he described as ‘night gaunts’. He later used the term in some of his stories. His ancestors came from South Devon; their graves can be found at Buckfastleigh, Berry Pomeroy and Broadhempston. I borrow his term as a tribute to his unique talent in disturbing and terrifying his readers.
Psychopomps are guides to the afterlife such as Charon the ferryman on the River Styx. They can be friendly or hostile depending on the circumstances. Ghosts can be the same...
Some of the stories in this book are set in Devon but others range farther afield; three are set in France, one in Canada, one in present day Poland, one in Vermont and one in Latvia.
The emphasis of many of these stories is military and railways. I hope you will enjoy them if it is possible to enjoy being scared and rattled up... I estimate publication sometime next year.
